‘Inexcusable’: UP man makes Insta reels inside Pocso courtroom, jailed

AGRA: A 25-year-old man was caught in a special Pocso court making reels and uploading it on Instagram during trial proceedings in a sensitive case linked to kidnapping and gang rape. Terming it an “inexcusable act”, the court sentenced the man to 15 days of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on him. The incident happened in Etah on Friday. Constable Vineet Kumar noticed the young man, a local, who was in the court premises for appearing in a different case under IPC and Pocso Act. When Kumar spotted the man quietly making reels, he immediately alerted the special judge (Pocso Act), Narendra Pal Rana.Taking a serious note of the violation, the judge ordered the man’s phone to be confiscated and directed that a case be registered against him. The judge also asked him to submit his reply within an hour. In his defence, the man claimed it was “done by mistake as his mobile automatically started making videos”. The judge considered this a “lame explanation” and pronounced the punishment an hour later. In a five-page order, Judge Rana stated: “In view of the facts and circumstances of the matter, it would be just and proper to punish him under section 23 (4) read with section 18 of Pocso Act.”Section 23 (4) of the Pocso Act, 2012, prescribes a penalty for contravening section 23 (1) or 23 (2), which prohibit the publication or dissemination of a child victim’s identity or any information that could reveal their identity by media or other means.
