AIISH organises workshop on Prevention of Self-harm and Suicidal Behaviours

The Department of Clinical Psychology, All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH), Mysuru, organised a workshop on “Prevention of Self-harm and Suicidal Behaviours” for AIISH students here recently.

The event was held on the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day, observed annually on September 10. As part of it, AIISH is also conducting a series of awareness programmes in schools and colleges across Mysuru.

Welcoming the participants, Rushi, professor and head, Department of Clinical Psychology, emphasised the message that suicide is preventable. She highlighted that each suicide attempt or death is a serious public health concern, leaving profound and lasting impacts on families and communities.

The workshop addressed risk and factors related to self-harm and suicide and focused on building resilience among students. Interactive activities were conducted to enhance decision-making, problem-solving skills, coping mechanisms, and resilience. The importance of addressing those in the group between 15 and 29, where suicide prevalence is particularly high, was strongly underlined, a press release said.

Dr. Rushi reaffirmed the need to support one another, listen with empathy, create psychologically safe environments, and encourage help-seeking behaviour. She also highlighted that the presence of students in the workshop reflected their shared responsibility in building a compassionate and supportive community.

Yashodhar Kumar G.Y., clinical psychologist, Department of Clinical Psychology, reiterated that every life matters, and every individual deserves to be heard, supported, and valued.
