We probably spend a bit too much time thinking and talking about clothes in the You office – but if you work for a magazine, that’s how it goes. Recently the chat has been along these lines: ‘Have you seen how good H&M’s new in section is right now? They are absolutely killing it.’

While I can admire the buckled mini skirts and fluffy hats that make up the brands autumn/winter collection, realistically I’m not going to be buying them. The coats and jackets on the other hand, I can get on board with.

First up, I’m obsessed with this trench coat, which offers an update on the winter classic via leather-look touches on the belt and collar. For extra style points, the way to wear your trench coat this season is with a jumper or triangle scarf draped over your shoulders over the trench – trust me, it looks more natural than it sounds, and our entire fashion team have been rocking the look.

Barn jackets have been all the rage this season, but if they’re a bit too country twee for you, H&M’s quilted jacket incorporates that on-trend corduroy collar with a cosy padded design. Layer over a jumper with jeans or joggers at the weekend and your casual winter look is sorted.

There’s also a very cool take on the puffer jacket with this sheeny khaki number, which blends that Cotswolds country shape with a sporty, city finish via the fabric.

Teddy-lined jacket

Heritage prints are everywhere right now; H&M has channeled them via a teddy-lined zip up jacket that is perfect for autumn walks. Or the checked barn jacket – I love the fact you can cinch in the waist on this one to make it more flattering.

Faux fur plays a strong part in the collection, which is no surprise given it’s a perennial winter favourite and super glamorous for parties and eveningwear.

The only thing I’m not sure about from H&M this season? The fact they are trying to bring back the tie for women. Reminds me too much of being in school/the Avril Lavigne-wannabe era, and the less said about that the better.
