Only Fools and Horses’ Patrick Murray’s life from tragic health battle to career after ‘work dried up’

Fans of Only Fools and Horses are mourning the loss of actor Patrick Murray, who sadly passed away on 2 October. The 68 year old was best known for his role as Mickey Pearce in the much-loved sitcom, a character he portrayed from the second series onwards. His final appearance was in the 2003 Christmas special, with the news of his death confirmed by the Only Fools and Horses Appreciation Society. The actor had been battling various health issues. In 2023, he revealed that part of his liver had been removed after doctors discovered a malignant tumour. Previously, in 2017, he had to cancel a charity bus journey for the Demelza children’s hospice at short notice due to treatment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In January 2021, he announced he had lung cancer but received the all clear the following year after successful treatment. However, in April 2023, he disclosed that the lung cancer had returned and spread. Aside from Only Fools and Horses, Murray was also known for his roles in The Terracotta Horse, Down in the Valley and the film Scum. On a personal note, he married his partner Anong, from Thailand, in 2016. The actor then lived in Thailand for a decade before coming back to Britain, where the pair raised their daughter Josie. He had hoped to obtain a visa so his family could relocate to the UK with him. After his return to Britain, Patrick found employment as an executive chauffeur. Speaking to Hello! magazine, he revealed: “Being out of the industry for so long, the work dried up, so I went back to driving an executive car, a Mercedes, to do it. “I only saw my baby on the phone for two years; I was a Skype dad.” In 2017, he launched a DJ career in Benidorm, appearing as his character Mickey Pearce while wearing the famous outfit.
