SRC rejects NAAZ’s mandatory athlete’s fee

The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) of Zimbabwe, has intervened in a dispute over a recently proposed annual licensing fee for athletes.

In a statement, it instructed the entire sporting community to disregard a communication from the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ).

The strongly worded media statement released on 2 October , 2025 through its Acting Director General, Peter Mudzimiri, categorically refuted a September 27 directive issued by NAAZ. The NAAZ communication, titled “ANNUAL LICENSE FEE,” had mandated that all athletes must pay an annual license fee of USD7.00 (inclusive of a USD4.00 SRC levy) starting from 1 January , 2026, to participate in any athletics event in Zimbabwe.

The SRC declared the NAAZ communication to be “FALSE and must be DISREGARDED,” confirming that the Commission has “NOT ISSUED any directive on licensing of athletes” to the SRC or to any National Association.

Legal authority clarified

The statement emphasised that the SRC is the sole authority for governing sporting and recreational activities, citing the Sports and Recreation Commission Act [Chapter 25:15].

While disavowing the compulsory licensing fee for individual athletes, the SRC did highlight the legal obligation of registered National Associations (like NAAZ) to remit annual levies for their members. This obligation is outlined in terms of section 26 of the Act read with section 18 of the Sports and Recreation Commission Act (General Regulations, 1995 (SI 342/1995)).
