Hey there, Connectors! The weekend is almost upon us, which means it’s nearly time for me to bid you adieu here until Monday. But before all of that, let’s make sure you slide into the weekend with your Connections streak intact.

I feel like I need to have some kind of horror reference in the column every day this month. So I’ll say here that I’ve just started a rewatch of Stranger Things before season 5 starts arriving in November. That first season is a real treat.

It stinks that Netflix is splitting up the season 5 episodes into three batches, which is partly to keep people who only sign back up to watch that show subscribed for an extra month or two. It’s a smart business move, to be fair, but splitting up seasons like this is such a bummer as a viewer. Streaming services should either release a entire season of a show all at once or stick to a weekly schedule. No in-between.

MORE FOR YOU

Anyway, today’s NYT Connections hints and answers for Thursday, October 2 are coming right up.

NYT Connections Hints – How To Play

Connections is a free New York Times daily word game that you can play on the NYT’s website or Games app. If you have an NYT All Access or Games subscription, you can access the Connections archive, which includes every previous game.

Connections presents you with a grid of 16 words (sometimes phrases, symbols or numbers). The aim is to arrange them into four groups of four. You don’t know how they hit together or what the category for each group is: that’s what you have to figure out.

There’s only one correct solution and there are often red herrings. You can guess incorrectly three times. A fourth wrong guess, and it’s game over.

Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to deduce, followed by blue, green and purple. Often, the yellow and green groups have synonyms, the blues have cultural references and the purples have some kind of wordplay involved. But this is not a hard and fast rule. Be ready for curveballs – part of the fun of Connections is in how the NYT shakes things up to keep you on your toes.

As with Wordle and similar games, it’s easy to share results with your friends using an emoji-based grid. The game tracks your progress too.

Many players take pride in having long win streaks or getting a reverse rainbow – correctly guessing the purple, blue, green and yellow groups in that order with no mistakes. That adds an extra little challenge.

And the hints for today’s Connections groups are:

🟨 Yellow group — it’s, like, way out there, man

🟩 Green group —

🟦 Blue group — somehow, everyone spontaneously knows the words

🟪 Purple group — like an emergency department in British hospitals, the airline Airblue, an effective dose of medication, theme songs at the end of anime and electrodialysis

Be warned: we’re starting to get into spoiler territory.

Let’s take a look at one answer for each group.

Here we go…

NYT Connections Hints – Groups/Categories

Today’s Connections groups are…

🟩 Green group — they move in a spiral (EDDY, FOOTBALL, TASMANIAN DEVIL, TORNADO)

🟦 Blue group — songs from musicals (CABARET, EDELWEISS, MAMMA MIA, MEMORY)

🟪 Purple group — what “ed” might indicate (EDITOR, EDUCATION, EDWARD, PAST TENSE)

NYT Connections Answers

Spoiler alert! Don’t scroll any further down the page until you’re ready to find out today’s Connections answers.

This is your last chance to look away.

This is your final warning!

Today’s Connections answers are…

🟨 Yellow group — boundary (BORDER, EDGE, EXTREMITY, LIMIT)

🟩 Green group — they move in a spiral (EDDY, FOOTBALL, TASMANIAN DEVIL, TORNADO)

🟦 Blue group — songs from musicals (CABARET, EDELWEISS, MAMMA MIA, MEMORY)

🟪 Purple group — what “ed” might indicate (EDITOR, EDUCATION, EDWARD, PAST TENSE)

I got the yellows right away and was a little bummed that LIMIT was the only one of the four that wasn’t in a corner of the initial grid. I would have appreciated that Easter egg.

TORNADO and TASMANIAN DEVIL made sense together as things that spin or spiral. FOOTBALL (what some people call that oval-shaped thing that isn’t a proper, spherical football) fit with those. As did EDDY, a current that runs contrary to a main current, like a whirlpool – that’s a fun little callback to Wednesday’s puzzle.

From there, the blues were no problem for me. They are “CABARET” from Cabaret, “EDELWEISS” from The Sound of Music, “MAMMA MIA” from Mamma Mia and “MEMORY” from Cats. I haven’t seen any of those musicals or films outside of the Mamma Mia movie, but I did know this one. (You’re not getting me to watch the Cats movie, sorry.)

That left the purples for the win. PAST TENSE here refers to words ending in -ed. As in slammed, crushed, winnowed (no idea why that sprang to mind as an example, but I’m going with it) etc. Fun little Easter egg with Ed, EDWARD and EDDY in this puzzle too.

Was that too tough of a hint? I feel like I gave enough examples. Please don’t be mad at me. 🙂

I’m really glad I remembered what an EDDY was, otherwise my streak might have been in trouble here. All the same, that’s my 217th win in a row. Here’s my grid for today:
