The Virginia High School League announced Tuesday that it named Eric Phillips the new assistant director for athletics.
Phillips, the athletic director at East Rockingham High School, will officially begin his new job Monday.
“I am pleased to welcome Eric to the VHSL staff. He was incredibly impressive during the interview process, and we are thrilled that he is joining our staff,” VHSL executive director Ty Gafford said in a press release. “Eric is not a new face to any of us. His experience serving on VHSL committees for alignment and sportsmanship, as well as his familiarity with serving as the state director for the Class 1 and Class 2 outdoor track championships and the Class 5 and 6 state football championships, will allow him to hit the ground running.
“Eric’s commitment to the VHSL, its member schools, and student participants will continue to be an enormous asset to the league.”
Phillips has spent 30 years in the Rockingham County school system, bringing a total of 32 years of experience to the position, including leadership and educational experience.
He’s served as the AD at East Rock since 2010 and before that, served at Spotswood High as its football coach, an assistant coach and an assistant baseball coach from 1995-2010.
“I have a passion and commitment for education-based student activities,” Phillips said in the release. “Serving on various VHSL committees and directing state events gave me a bigger appreciation for the league office.
“As a Virginia High School League staff member, I will continue to work tirelessly to promote education, leadership, sportsmanship, character and citizenship. I am a positive person, and I will bring that optimistic attitude to the VHSL. I am a believer that academic activities and athletics change lives.”
As assistant director for athletics, Phillips will help oversee various aspects of high school athletic programs, including sportsmanship, managing officials’ associations and handling administrative tasks, among other responsibilities.
Phillips is a Spotswood graduate and a Gardner-Webb alum. He holds a Master’s degree in athletic administration from the United States Sports Academy.
