Miles Mikolas makes what could be final Busch Stadium start with Cardinals: First Pitch

Entering his final Busch Stadium start of 2025, Miles Mikolas can make one more pitch in St. Louis to remain in St. Louis.

Mikolas starts Saturday at 6:15 p.m. as the Cardinals continue a series vs. the Brewers, the Redbirds’ second-to-last home game of the season.

St. Louis blitzed the Brewers 7-1 in the opener Friday.

Mikolas, 37, is a free agent at year’s end as his three-year, $55.75-million extension reaches its conclusion. He is the longest tenured current Cardinal, and he has talked about wanting to remain a Cardinal. He would welcome an offer from the team and its new front office leadership to return for 2026, Post-Dispatch Cardinals beat writer Derrick Goold has reported.

The right-hander Mikolas (8-10, 4.80 ERA) has lowered his ERA from 5.17 over his last five outings with solid outings like the one Sunday at Milwaukee. He went five innings and permitted two runs.

Part of that change is in using his fastball more on the edges and out of the strike zone recently.

In his career at Busch Stadium, Mikolas is 29-33 with a 3.70 ERA.

The Brewers will start right-hander Chad Patrick (3-8, 3.64 ERA), who pitched an inning in relief vs. St. Louis last weekend.

The Cardinals are 75-79.

The Brewers are 94-60, baseball’s best record by two games. Despite Friday’s loss, a Cubs defeat reduced the Brewers’ magic number to clinch the National League Central to three. Any combination of Brewers wins and Cubs losses totaling three will clinch the division.

Injury report

Willson Contreras, 1B (right bicep tightness): Contreras, who had been dealing with pain in his bicep for more than a week, was placed on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday, retroactive to Tuesday. The move ends his season. The bicep tightened up during an at-bat Monday, forcing him to leave the game early. He was hoping to avoid an IL stint. Updated Sept. 16

Zack Thompson, LHP (shoulder, lat strain): Lefty starter remains on a throwing program in Jupiter, trying to overcome some setbacks as he increased the intensity of his throws through the course of the season. He’s visited St. Louis for evaluation to monitor if the injury worsens. Thompson has been sidelined since the start of March and was transferred to the 60-day injured list in early April. There is no timetable for his return to the mound. Updated Aug. 6

Masyn Winn, SS (right meniscus tear): After dealing with ongoing pain in his knee caused by a slight meniscus tear that scratched him from the lineup repeatedly, the Cardinals put Winn on the injured list on Sept. 13, ending his season. He was attempting to play through the pain after being assured by the medical team that he could not do more damage to the knee. Updated Sept. 13
