Three Mpox Cases Confirmed in Barbados
The Ministry of Health and Wellness in Barbados has confirmed three new cases of Mpox, formerly known as Monkeypox, in adults during August 2025. The cases involved one woman and two men, all of whom have since recovered.
This brings the total number of confirmed Mpox infections in Barbados to six since 2022. Health officials noted that none of the recent cases had a travel history. Two of the individuals were in contact with each other, while the third case remains under investigation. All three were isolated at home, and contact tracing continues.
Mpox is an infectious disease that spreads primarily through close contact with an infected person. Transmission can occur during intimate or sexual encounters, day-to-day household interactions, or in healthcare settings where protective measures are not properly used. The virus can also spread through contaminated clothing or linens.
Symptoms typically include a skin rash or lesions, often appearing on the face, mouth, nose, or genital area. Other signs may include fever, swollen lymph nodes, muscle aches, fatigue, and back pain. Illness usually lasts between two and four weeks. While most patients recover fully, health authorities note that a small percentage of cases worldwide have resulted in death.
