'Are You Siddaramaiah’s Woman?': Heated Argument Over Hindi At Bengaluru's Namma Metro Station – Video

Bengaluru: A video from a Namma Metro station in Bengaluru has surfaced, showing two women engaged in a heated argument. The situation was another episode in a language war. The fight reportedly started when one passenger wanted to speak in Kannada, while the other replied in Hindi, leading to a loud argument near the ticket counter. The video, which appeared to have been shot at the ticket counter, was widely shared on social media. While one of the women responded in Hindi, another constantly asked her to speak in Kannada. To which, the burqa-clad woman said, “Tu aurat hai kya Siddaramaiah ki (Are you Siddaramaiah’s woman?)”, referring to the Karnataka Chief Minister. This led to a frenzy of response in the comment box. One of the users said, “First time I am seeing female language warriors fighting”. “Absolutely, what’s more dear, the language or the religion, is a tough question to answer for anyone,” wrote another. Language War In the past few years, fights over language have become a serious issue, with clashes breaking out between locals and people from other states who speak different languages. For example, in Maharashtra, some Hindi-speaking residents were even attacked for refusing to speak Marathi. Last year, Karnataka made it compulsory that at least 60 per cent of all shop and business signboards must be written in Kannada. Some activists took the law into their own hands by breaking boards that didn’t follow the rule. People carrying hammers and pulling down non-Kannada signs showed that in the South, language politics is not just about rules—it’s deeply tied to identity, power, and resistance.
