Football fans admit to owning a car purely to match beloved club colours

One-in-eight footy fans drive a car which matches the colour of their favourite team, a study by Renault has revealed. A poll of 2,000 fans found that 12% admitted their motor was the same colour as their team’s home shirt. Those from Manchester were most obsessed, with 20% – that’s one-in-five – saying they drove either a red or blue car, depending on whether they were fans of the Red Devils or Pep’s Man City. In a nationwide study by Renault, Liverpool and Everton fans weren’t far behind, with 15% buying red or blue cars due to their love of the Reds or The Toffees . The study found that the least likely fans to buy cars based on their love of their home side were fans of Sunderland. Just 4% of fans of The Black Cats fans said they bought a red or white car. Man United fan Chris Baybrook, 44, said he refused to buy a car that wasn’t red. He said: “My first driving instructor had a blue car and I refused to drive it, so I learned with my dad in his red VW Golf. I’ve never driven any other colour of car. Even when I go on holiday I request a red rental car.” Renault chiefs found that 69% of those polled said that colour has a ‘positive impact’ on their moods – with green and yellow, its new Renault 5 ‘Pop!’ colours – among the favourites. One-in-five said they smiled when they saw a brightly-coloured car on the road, with one-in-seven saying they reckoned the folk driving them had equally colourful personalities. Adam Wood, MD of Renault UK, said: “Britons are famously conservative when it comes to choosing car colours, but with the launch of Renault 5 with the option of our two Pop! colours we plan to bring some joie de vivre to the UK’s roads.” The Premier League of those who chose the colour of their car according to their footy sides were as follows: 1 – Manchester United (red) – 20% 2 – Manchester City (blue)- 20% 3 – Liverpool – (red) – 15% 4 – Everton – (blue) 15% 5 – Nottingham Forest (red) – 15% For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletter by clicking here .
