A proposed Wawa store in Hampden Township that hit a roadblock earlier this year is back on the table.
Wawa filed a new land development plan to build a store on lots 4A and 4B in Cumberland Technology Park on Technology Parkway at the intersection of Mount Zion Drive and Technology Parkway near Wertzville Road.
The project was back in front of the township’s planning commission on Thursday night, months after the Hampden Township Commissioners unanimously voted to deny the chain’s land development plan on Technology Parkway.
Hampden Township manager, Keith Metts, previously told PennLive that Wawa’s developer did not present a plan that was compliant with all of the township’s ordinance regulations.
The Philadelphia-area chain is proposing to build a 6,049-square-foot store with fuel pumps in front of the Residence Inn by Marriott. The property is located near the Interstate 81 exit for Wertzville Road.
Betsy Davidson of H. Edward Black & Associates told the planning commission that the newly submitted plan includes several additions:
The addition of .65 acre lot on 4B, which will be used for storm water management and open space.
Added a deceleration lane on Technology Parkway
Storm sewer modifications at the intersection of Mount Zion Drive and Technology Parkway would be made to accommodate that lane.
Added landscaping.
The land development plan was recommended by the planning commission. Ultimately, township supervisors will have the final say.
Several projects, including rehabilitation hospitals and hotels, have been proposed for Cumberland Technology Park on Technology Parkway over the last several years.
The business park has grown immensely over the last several years and includes Residence Inn by Marriott, Helen M. Simpson Rehabilitation Hospital – West Shore at UPMC, Belco Community Credit Union, Holiday Inn Express & Suites, UPMC West Shore hospital, UPMC Outpatient Services, UPMC Medical Office Building 1, UPMC Medical Office Building 2, The Rocco and Nancy Ortenzio Cancer Pavilion, the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute, The Patriot-News and PennLive, Hoover Rehabilitation Services, the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Delta Development, Hampden Township Public Works, and Harmony at West Shore.
Pam Health is also building a 42-bed post-acute medical rehabilitation hospital at 4685 Mount Zion Drive
Wawa is undergoing a major central Pennsylvania expansion that will allow it to open about 40 stores over the next five to seven years. The chain announced the expansion in 2022.
Wawa has already opened stores in Lower Swatara Township and East Pennsboro Township, as well as locations in York, Franklin, and Lycoming counties.
