The Kansas City Chiefs were up against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, September 14, and unfortunately, they lost their second game of the season, making them 0-2. This is the first time in the Patrick Mahomes era that the team has been 0-2 to start the season, which hurts even more.
While the Eagles stole the show on Sunday, there were some other things going on that certainly distracted from the action on the field. For one, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce had a burst on the sidelines, and he was caught on camera yelling and throwing things. The cameras at Fox Sports captured the outburst, which can be seen here.
But, aside from that Kelce drew some attention for a decision he made before the game even started. Now, he’s been getting blowback for it, and the latest is in the form of criticism from a Chiefs reporter.
Critic Doesn’t Appreciate Kansas City Chiefs Tight End Travis Kelce’s ‘Stunt’
Not everyone is happy with Kelce’s actions as of late, and one person not happy is Robert Zeglinski from For the Win. In a Monday, September 15 feature, he discusses Kelce wearing a shirt in support of Chiefs’ Rashee Rice, who’s currently serving a six-game suspension for an incident that took place in March 2024 that involved a high-speed car crash with six cars.
The crash, in which Rice apparently drove nearly 120 miles per hour on a Dallas highway, resulted in two people going to the hospital with bad injuries, and Rice pleaded guilty to two third-degree felony charges related to the event. He also came to a $1 million settlement with two of the crash victims and may still have more legal challenges.
Rice worked out a deal with the NFL and accepted a six-game suspension for the incident. Well, Kelce and some other Chiefs player wore “Free 4” shirts on Sunday in support of Rice.
“Whatever motivated the Chiefs to wear these shirts, it’s an absolutely horrible look for what is the NFL’s gold standard franchise over the last half-decade,” Zeglinski stated. “Though I should probably add the disclaimer that they are the gold standard under football terms and football terms alone if we’re going to include little stunts like this.”
Zeglinski added that he doesn’t think “Rice is irredeemable,” but that he “committed a serious crime that he, at least in part, admitted to” and should accept and “face accountability for it.”
Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes Talks Loss
Following the loss to the Eagles, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes talked about what happened on the field. He said that Kansas City “got the defense that we wanted” but that at one point, he had a throw go too early to Kelce, so it end up going to Eagles safety Andrew Mukuba to get possession.
“Just trying to put it on his body low before that hole player got there,” Mahomes said. “I think if I can put it more on his body, and not so far out in front of him, then he can catch it, take the hit, and get in the end zone.”
