Nantucket School District is facing backlash after inviting a conservative motivational speaker who called for women to ‘submit’ to their husbands.
Enraged parents and teachers slammed the district for welcoming speaker Maxamillian Dutton last week as they said his controversial takes on social media should have prevented him from speaking to students.
Dutton has built a following on social media as a Christian conservative speaker and business guru, including past remarks saying that a ‘good man will get his wife to submit to him.’
On the day of his appearance at Nantucket School District last Friday, Dutton shared an Instagram clip where he declared: ‘You’re not a real Christian woman if you are not submitting to your husband.’
He also referenced a passage of the Bible from Ephesians that states: ‘Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.’
The school district said after Dutton’s appearance that it was revising its policy on vetting visiting speakers, acknowledging that his appearance triggered a wave of criticism from the community.
Superintendent Beth Hallett said she was establishing a committee to review potential speakers in the future, and said she would ensure they aligned with the school’s ‘vision.’
Hallett admitted she was unaware of Dutton’s past remarks before he was invited, and said his ‘public views reflect perspectives about women that are inconsistent with our school’s values of respect, inclusion, and equity.’
Dutton describes himself as a ‘mindset coach’ and former US Marine who teaches the importance of toughness and self-improvement.
He has also shared opinions in the past that ‘poverty is a choice’ and argues that evolution shouldn’t be taught in schools and students should instead learn the Bible’s creationist story.
He was reportedly paid $5,000 for his appearance, but his speech in Nantucket reportedly landed poorly with some locals, as Page Martineau, the district teacher’s union president, told Nantucket Current that she found his views on Instagram ‘horrifying.’
‘It is very clear from a quick search what his opinions are about gender roles, about religion, about religion’s involvement in the classroom, about the state of politics in America. He is very divisive and holds a lot of extreme opinions,’ she said.
‘I just do not understand how he passed muster. I do not understand.’
A female student at the school, who chose not to be named, also told the outlet that Dutton’s focus on men made her feel ‘uncomfortable.’
‘I didn’t like that it was focused on the men, and he was negatively talking about women,’ the student said.
‘He said men should be the dominant ones. He was putting women back.’
Another student reportedly added that Dutton ‘told all of the women in the assembly that they needed to be untouchable and be untouched by men.’
However, not all attendees disliked the motivational talk, as student Ronald Del Rosario Gomez described him as ‘one of the best presenters we’ve had over at our school.’
‘I personally don’t think he said anything offensive. I found the points that he shared with my classmates helpful not only for me but any high school student.’
Rosario Gomez, who posed for a picture with Dutton after the event, added: ‘I don’t know what you mean by (Dutton facing) blowback but I think he was great.’
Another student told the outlet that Dutton’s speech made him decide he wanted to enlist in the military and join the Coast Guard.
In a statement sent to parents following Dutton’s appearance, Hallett said the motivational speaker was invited to speak about ‘the importance of building confidence, believing in self-worth, and understanding the role that each person plays in fostering a positive school culture.’
‘While his message was engaging and uplifting, it has since come to our attention that some of Mr. Dutton’s public views reflect perspectives about women that are inconsistent with our school’s values of respect, inclusion, and equity.
‘We were not aware of these perspectives beforehand, as they were not evident on his professional website.
‘We want to be clear that Nantucket Public Schools does not condone messaging that demeans or restricts the dignity or agency of any individual.’
The superintendent said that her new committee for school speakers would ‘make sure that their messaging, both professional and personal, aligns with NPS’s core values, vision, and mission.’
Nantucket High School principal Mandy Hilemn reportedly admitted that she had not seen Dutton’s Instagram account before booking him, and said it was a ‘mistake’ for her not to check beforehand.
Dutton did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
