Rumler, VanZuiden lead locals in regional golf action

Carding 4-under rounds of golf was a good number for a pair of local linksters on Wednesday as Illinois boys golf regional action took place.
Both Moline junior Isaac Rumler and Fulton junior Owen VanZuiden shot 4-under scores to win their respective regional individual titles and help their teams advance to next week’s sectionals.
Here are quick recaps of regionals that included local teams:
Class 3A
Moline Maroons win at Plainfield Central
With Rumler back to his success after health issues slowed him down at the recent Western Big 6 Conference Meet, the Maroons shot a team 294 score to top the nine-team Class 3A Plainfield Central Regional at Wedgewood Golf Club in Joliet and advance to their own 3A sectional on Monday at Short Hills Country Club in East Moline.
Moline topped fellow team advancers Oswego East (298) and Oswego High School (303). United Township (374) placed eighth and Rock Island (391) ninth. Neither the Panthers nor Rocks had any individuals advance.
Rumler’s round included six birdies that offset a double bogey on the par-5 6th hole, which was his only blemish on his card. His 67 beat Oswego East senior Zach Johnson by a stroke, as those were the only two rounds under par.
Moline senior Greer Peters, fresh off his Western Big 6 Conference individual medalist honor and fourth straight all-conference nod, added a 2-over 73 that placed him fifth. Peters offset four bogeys on par-4 holes with a pair of birdies.
Sophomore Gage Powell and senior Aden Blome finished in a three-way tie for 12th with 77s for Moline’s final two counting scores. Junior Reese Daniel carded a 78 to tie for 15th.
Sophomore Abram Roman led UT and junior Jase Hawk had Rocky’s best score — both tying for 39th with 89s.
Class 1A
Riverdale wins again
The Riverdale Rams had the comfort of home-course advantage to win their third straight regional title, topping the 16-team gathering at Byron Hills Golf Course.
For the Rams, who hope to make another run at state, it was also their 11th regional crown in the last 12 years.
The Rams shot a team total of 301 to top Fulton (306) and Lanark Eastland (324) in the event that included Erie (7th, 347) and Alleman (9th, 355).
Senior Braden Janicki led the Rams with a 1-under 70 as he took silver in the individual race. He was 4-under for his round before finishing with a double on No. 16 and a bogey on his final hole.
Fellow seniors Mason Smyser and Blake Sutton added 72 and 78 to the team total and junior Andrew Birkland threw in an 81 to round out the Rams’ team scoring. Smyser and Sutton placed fourth and 10th individually.
VanZuiden’s winning 67 included an eagle on the par-5 13th and four other birdies to offset a double bogey that was his only blemish. He had quite a three-hole stretch on the back side with the double on 12, the eagle on 13 and a birdie on No. 14 to power him to his first individual regional title.
The Steamers were making a run for the regional crown with seniors Jacob Voss (73) and Dawson Price (74) finishing fifth and sixth individually. Fulton’s final counting score was a 92 by senior Chase Dykstra.
