Strictly's Claudia Winkleman unrecognisable without trademark fringe in BBC show almost 30 years ago

Strictly Come Dancing host Claudia Winkleman is famed for her trademark hairstyle, but she once looked very different. The new series of the BBC One dance competition Strictly has finally arrived with this weekend’s launch show and Claudia is back at the helm alongside co-host Tess Daly. But before Claudia landed in the Strictly ballroom , she appeared on another BBC show and looked very different to the presenter we all know and love on our screens today. In 1996, the now 53-year-old appeared on BBC’s Good Morning with Anne and Nick and was billed as a chat-up connoisseur. She featured during a segment about ‘improving your pulling power’ and discussed how women like to be approached, and how women like to get the attention of the opposite sex. When the episode originally aired on television, Claudia was only 24 years old and looked stunning with long brown hair with a wispy side fringe. She also donned more subtle make-up, including light eye shadow and a berry lip gloss. During the segment presenter Nick Owen asked Claudia if she ever got “chatted up”, and she replied: “No, hardly ever.” Claudia then explained:” The only time it did happen was when a boy came to talk to a girlfriend of mine, and then he turned around after she said ‘no go away’. “He said, ‘I would have asked you, but you’re a bit sure of yourself’,” before she a worried expression to Nick. The TV star also hinted at using eye contact to get the attention of somebody that you’re romantically interested in. “It can be terrifying as you can be sitting at the other end of the bar making eye contact for about an hour and a half, and then he’ll leave!”, Claudia added. Aside from a brief flirtation with blonde highlights, Claudia has stuck to her dramatic dark cut throughout her time on Strictly and reckons that it has been beneficial to her career. While many people see having a perfect fringe as high maintenance due to the upkeep involved, Claudia reckons you need to make less effort when your fringe “starts at the back of your head”. The presenter previously told Grazia : “I love eyeliner, but you don’t even need makeup really. “If you’ve got a very heavy fringe, you’re wearing some old, battered, buckled-up boots, and you’re holding a book, then you’re done. You look like a real-life pirate.” She has been married to her film producer husband, Kris Thykier, for 25 years and has three children – Jake, Matilda, and Arthur. But the TV star usually keeps her family life away from the public eye. Strictly Come Dancing airs every Saturday on BBC One and BBC iPlayer
