Black Sabbath’s Ozzy Osbourne’s family life and dream of moving back to England

Ozzy Osbourne tragically passed away in July this year just weeks after performing with his band at in his home city of Birmingham. Black Sabbath, who formed in Birmingham in 1968 and consisted of members Ozzy, Tony Lommi on guitar, Geezer Butler on bass and Bill Ward on drums, performed together at Villa Park, Birmingham, at the beginning of July. Just weeks after the iconic Back to the Beginning performance , Ozzy Osbourne passed away from a reported heart attack aged 76. His family released a statement at the time, which read: “It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. “He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time.” Music legend Ozzy , who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2019, was married to Sharon Osbourne and the two shared three children. Ozzy and Sharon and their two youngest kids – Jack and Kelly – appeared in the hit MTV reality show The Osbournes, which followed their life in California and aired between 2002 and 2005. On Thursday (October 8), the BBC is releasing a new documentary titled Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne: Coming Home, which explores the family’s journey back to UK ahead of Ozzy’s final concert after living in the US. The 60-minute film follows Ozzy, Sharon, Kelly and Jack – as well as their close friends – as they plan the next stage of their lives together. The trailer offers a glimpse of their sprawling English country mansion in Buckinghamshire and Sharon says they “always referred to this as home”. In the clip, Ozzy says “I’m so looking forward to an English summer” and “I feel like I’m finally home”. Their son Jack says the family all “scattered” after their reality TV show The Osbournes, and adds: “It’s like we’re back together again.” According to documentary producer Expectation, the film will be a “moving and inspirational account” of the last chapter of Ozzy’s life, which was filmed over three years and has been told through “unique and intimate access” to the whole family. Ben Wicks and Colin Barr, executive producers at Expectation, said: “It was an incredible privilege to spend the last few years with Ozzy, as well as Sharon, Jack and Kelly. “Ozzy wanted to make it back to the UK and appear on stage one last time – our film is an inspiring and poignant account of him fulfilling that dream. “Ozzy was loved by millions around the world not just for his music, but for his sense of mischief and his honesty, all of which we saw plenty of in the final years of his life. “But one thing shone through even more brightly to us, and that was Ozzy’s intense love for his exceptional family who were by his side through it all.” Ozzy married Sharon, who is the daughter of his former Black Sabbath manager Don Arden, in July 1982 after they met in the 1970s. She took over after his manager after he was booted out of the band and their romantic relationship began. Recalling her first impressions of Ozzy, Sharon previously said in an interview: “He was so funny, so funny and quick-witted and yet very vulnerable. And I just thought he was the funniest, sweetest guy I’d ever met, because he was so vulnerable about everything, and that just attracted me to him.” Ozzy and Sharon had three children together, Jack, Kelly and Aimee, who did not appear in the reality TV series that launched the careers of her two siblings. The couple temporarily split in 2016. According to Sharon, they tried marriage counselling to get their relationship back on track, but gave up because it made Ozzy angry. In 2017, during an interview with music magazine Rolling Stone, Ozzy joked that the secret to his marriage was “don’t get caught with your mistress”. He is quoted as telling Rolling Stone: “When I was a crazy f*****, I’m lucky she didn’t walk out. Now I’m coming on five years clean and sober, and I’ve realised what a f****** idiot I was. I mean, I’m still nuts, but in control of it a bit more.” In 2017, he and Sharon renewed their wedding vows in Las Vegas. The family reportedly began planning their move back to England in 2022, but the move was delayed for various reasons including Ozzy’s health. The release date for Sharon And Ozzy Osbourne: Coming Home was postponed in August out of respect to Osbourne’s family following the rock star’s death in July, weeks after his Back To The Beginning concert with his Black Sabbath bandmates. Sharon And Ozzy Osbourne: Coming Home will air on BBC One at 9pm on October 2 and will also be available on BBC iPlayer.
