On October 1, the government shut down, but that wasn’t part of the plan for a class of middle schoolers from the Bronx visiting Washington, D.C. Luckily for them, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez pitched in to save the day.
On Bluesky, Ocacio-Cortez wrote, “A bus of Bronx middle schoolers pulled up to the Capitol this morning for a long-planned field trip just a few hours after the government shut down. All Capitol tours were cancelled as the guides can’t work in shutdown. So I escorted them in myself and gave them a personal tour. They were great!”
She also shared a quick clip on TikTok while she led these middle schoolers on my personal dream tour of the Capital:

And many praised AOC for understanding “that the job is actually public service.”
And lots of people also shared just how much they envy those kids.
People are even calling it a presidential move.
The video also found its way over to X, formerly Twitter, where it’s been viewed over 3 million times:

And even people who aren’t the biggest AOC fans had to admit that it was “actually pretty cool” of her to step up for these kids.
AOC, if you’re reading this, do you give tours for chronically online millennials? Asking for a friend (myself and 30-50 of my colleagues).
