Accra, Oct 1, GNA— Nestlé Ghana Limited, a multinational food and drinks processor, has donated logistics to the Waste Pickers Waste Association to promote sanitation nationwide.
The donation, which included waste picking tools, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), mobile phones for data collection, and electronic weight scales, aims to strengthen plastic waste collection efforts across the country and improve the livelihoods and working conditions of informal waste pickers.
The donation was done by Alhaji Yussif Sulemana, Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, at a brief event which was held at the premises of the Ministry Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation.
The items were received by Mr. Divine Dekonor, President of the Plastic Waste Pickers Association.
Madam Salome Azevedo, Managing Director, Nestlé Ghana Limited, in an address, underscored the company’s motivation in supporting Ghana’s sustainability practices.
“And I do sleep a lot better at night when I know that Nestlé Ghana since 2019 has been making efforts towards plastic collection and today we do collect more than what we produce, ”she said.
She noted that the donation reflected the comprehensive support of the company to Ghana’s sanitation, stressing that it was all intended to allow for communities to be cleaner and the environment to be healthier.
Mr. Sulemana, the deputy Minister, praised the company for its seriousness regarding environmental practices.
“This is not the first time you’re doing this. It’s on record that over the years You have been supporting our cyclists, our cycle riders and all of that to be able to pick the plastic in the system.”
He called on other manufacturers of plastic materials to emulate Nestlé’s good example and assured Nestlé that the donation would be put to good use.
Mr. Divine Dekonor, President of the Association, assured the Deputy Minister that the donated items would be properly used.
