Gwyneth Paltrow accused of butchering traditional Japanese dish in latest cooking video

Gwyneth Paltrow loves an unconventional cooking demonstration – but some home chefs have slammed her for butchering a traditional Japanese dish.

The 52-year-old shared a clip to Instagram as she cooked in her expansive kitchen as a part of her ‘boyfriend breakfast’ series, making Okonomiyaki – a Japanese-style veggie pancake.

Paltrow showed herself preparing the intricate dish but critics were quick to point out that she did not technically make the cultural meal correctly since it was not crispy enough and used multiple flours.

Okonomiyaki is a savory Japanese pancake dish made with a flour and dashi batter mixed with shredded cabbage, eggs, and often pork belly, seafood or vegetables, before being pan-fried and topped with a sweet and savory sauce, Japanese mayonnaise, and bonito flakes.

While the Oscar-winner proudly stated she was making Okonomiyaki in the caption, commenters declared it wasn’t made properly, claiming she was technically making a Korean pancake instead.

‘I am Japanese, and it’s our soul food and clearly this is NOT Okonomiyaki,’ declared another. ‘I want to teach her how to make it in original very tasty crispy way.’

‘No no noooo that is not Okonomiyaki at all. Looks like “savory veggie pancake with Japanese flavor” and healthy,’ complained one user.

‘Whose recipe? That is not Okonomiyaki,’ snarked another.

‘No way this is Okonomiyaki,’ someone else chimed in, while another asked: ‘I wonder where it is from lol.’

‘It looks more like Korean pancake. Healthy and delicious anyway. Great job,’ reasoned another.

‘It is her VERSION of Okonomiyaki. Probably Americanized per usual,’ one user defended her. ‘Maybe she doesn’t like it crispy. Maybe she didn’t have time to get water out of veggies to make crispy. Either way she made something she likes and it was healthy.’

In the video, Paltrow prepared the batter using almond and tapioca flour with a nut milk, adding eggs and then some shredded cabbages, carrots and scallions.

The Goop Founder then poured it into the pan and cooked it as one large pancake, flipping it to cook on both sides.

Next, Paltrow spread spicy mayonnaise over the pancake and added fried eggs before topping with bonito flakes.

The main issue fans had was that Paltrow appeared to combine elements of a Korean and Japanese pancake.

The batter for Korean Pancakes often includes a combination of flours (wheat, tapioca, potato, rice) which is what Paltrow did, resulting in a chewy and crispy texture, with the main ingredients (such as green onions and seafood) often added individually or cooked with the batter.

However, with Okonomiyaki – although similar – the key ingredients include shredded cabbage and grated yam which is mixed directly into the batter.

Over the summer, Paltrow sparked a heated response after sharing a video whipping up an intricate, gourmet breakfast for husband Brad Falchuk as it was her disposal of the egg whites that infuriated her followers.

In the Instagram post, the actress made a lobster benedict for her husband of seven years, and was seen cracking eggs into a strainer before then appearing to tip the whites directly onto the floor and nonchalantly carrying on with poaching.

Fans were shocked by the star’s apparent mess making – taking to the comment section to share their thoughts.

The Goop founder has been married to Fulchuk, a television writer known for co-creating massive hits like Glee and American Horror Story, since 2018.

The couple do not share any children together but are stepparents to each other’s kids. Brad is stepfather to two kids Paltrow shares with her ex-husband Chris Martin — daughter Apple and son Moses.

The actress is also stepmother to Isabella and Brody, whom Brad shares with his ex-wife Suzanne Bukinik.
