Stirling’s new glass recycling bins are set to be rolled out from next week. Approximately 41,000 wheelie bins, each with a capacity of 140 litres, will start being delivered to households from Wednesday, October 8. It follows a recent review of glass recycling which the council believes will enhance the collection service for residents and save Stirling Council around £300,000 annually. The new wheelie bins – black with a purple lid – will first be delivered to Cowie , and all residents in the Stirling area will receive a letter in the coming days detailing the changes and key collection dates. Until January 5, 2026, the frequency of glass recycling collections will remain the same. After this date, collections will take place every eight weeks. The letter to residents will also provide the first two new collection dates after January 5, and from March, residents can check subsequent collection dates by downloading the waste calendar from the council website. Residents are now being asked to place their old 55 litre glass collection boxes next to their new bins on their next scheduled collection date, where they will be taken away for recycling. However, residents can choose to keep the boxes for their own use, although the waste services team will no longer collect boxes filled with glass. Residents are reminded that the new bins belong to the property and must be kept and used for glass collection. Households receiving assisted collections, or those using shared bins at flat complexes, will have their containers collected and returned by the refuse team on designated collection days. The new glass collection bins have cost £845,000 and have been funded through the UK Government’s Extended Producer Responsibility funding programme. Chair of the Environment, Transport and Net Zero Committee, Cllr Jen Preston, said: “The new wheeled bins take up the same footprint as the existing boxes and the 140-litre volume provides an additional 17 per cent capacity for residents to recycle glass. “The bins will make it easier for the public to present their glass for recycling, removing the need for boxes to be lifted and carried to the kerbside. This will also benefit our waste services team through reduced manual handling and avoiding tipping boxes into the vehicles, which can be a risk to health and safety. “We thank residents for their help in implementing the new system and they will also continue to benefit from the availability of our 26 glass recycling sites across the Stirling area.” The choice to examine glass recycling collection was made after a comparison study with other Scottish councils and an assessment of the different alternatives available for glass recycling.
