23-yr-old caught in web of K1.9m theft

A 23-year-old woman from Rigo in Central province is currently answering to a charge of receiving stolen property coming out of a bigger theft case of K1.9 million from a business owner.

Eather Tuai, was caught in a million-kina theft perpetrated by Bank of South Pacific Staff in collusion with several BSP customers where K1.9 million belonging to a Koubu Trading Limited was illegally sent through internet banking to 58 accounts (4 belonged to other commercial banks) over four days. Ms Tuai made her first appearance in court on Tuesday in the Waigani Committal Court before magistrate Paul Puri Nii.

Her charge was read to her where she indicated she heard and understood why she was in court.

According to the Police reports Ms Tuai was falsely led to believe she was assisting her aunty and a friend of her aunt to use her bank card.

When the friend of her aunt got Ms Tuai’s account details he sent it to the perpetrator in charge of stealing the money and K20,000 was sent Ms Tuai’s account. He then got the card from Ms Tuai and used use to K19,300. The K700 left in Ms Tuai’s card was used by Ms Tuai’s aunt and another woman.

Police say Ms Tuai although was not a beneficiary of the money was still bound to be charged for receiving stolen property as her card was being used.
