John Wick: Original Samurai Western Script In Keanu Reeves Franchise Is Complete

The John Wick universe is expanding with talks of a fifth film, spinoffs, an animated version and now original samurai Western. According to writer-director Austin Everett, he has completed the script. Is it the same anime project that is being teased by director Chad Stahelski? Here’s what we know. New samurai Western film in John Wick franchise Austin Everett was named one of Variety’s Screenwriters to Watch for 2025. The young filmmaker shared that he has written a original samurai Western set in the John Wick world and “that’s probably as much as I can say.” This new film is different from the fifth film announced by Lionsgate. Additionally, director Chad Stahelski shared in late 2023 that a Japanese anime project in the franchise was being developed. Initially, it was envisioned as a TV show. However, in October 2024, Stahelski revealed that it was now turned into a full movie instead. Several spinoffs in the universe from Ballerina, The Continental and Caine have also been released or in the works. It is unsure on which character would the samurai Western be focused on. Vanessa Taylor is writing the prequel script, which will focus on the origins of the younger John Wick, who completed the “Impossible Task” to earn his freedom from the High Table. Stahelski stated, “We thought these ideas would be best told through that art style.” Keanu Reeves will return to voice John Wick in the project and he is also producing alongside Stahelski, Basil Iwanyk, and Erica Lee.
