The New York Giants made the decision last week to move on from Russell Wilson as their starting quarterback. After an 0-3 start to the season, Wilson was demoted in favor of rookie signal caller Jaxson Dart.
In his first NFL start against the Los Angeles Chargers, Dart made the Giants feel good about their decision. He led New York to a 21-18 win and looked good doing it. Dart completed 13 of his 20 pass attempts for 111 yards, a touchdown, and no interceptions, while also running for 54 yards and another score.
Wilson’s days as a starter in the NFL could very well be over. His days with the Giants could be numbered.

Since being benched, quite a few rumors and a lot of speculation has come out about Wilson. Many believe that he could be a trade candidate ahead of the deadline this year.
Russell Wilson #3 of the New York Giants warms up prior to facing the Kansas City Chiefsat MetLife Stadium on September 21, 2025 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
If New York does make him available, which teams could have interest in Wilson? A new suggestion has been made for the 36-year-old quarterback.
Sports Illustrated’s Matt Verderame has suggested a deal between the Giants and Atlanta Falcons that would send Wilson out of town in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick. Of course, the Falcons have Kirk Cousins on their roster who they could do. If Cousins is moved, Wilson could be brought in to replace him as the team’s backup behind Michael Penix Jr.
“If the Falcons end up dealing Cousins to a team in need of a starter, they can then turn to the Giants and offer a future seventh-rounder for Wilson to be the backup to Penix,” Verderame wrote. “Maybe it doesn’t make much sense to lose a draft pick and play QB musical chairs for the QB2 job, but maybe Wilson can offer value in terms of mentorship for Penix, who has a pretty deep ball that rivals all the moon shots Wilson has delivered in his illustrious career.”
It’s a strange suggestion, to say the least. Moving on from Cousins and acquiring Wilson doesn’t do much in the grand scheme of things. Getting rid of Cousins’ contract wouldn’t be a bad option, but adding Wilson wouldn’t fix Atlanta’s long-term backup quarterback situation.
That being said, Wilson could be an elite backup for this season. If something happened to Penix, he would be able to step in and play.

So far this season, Wilson has completed 59.5 percent of his passes for 786 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. He has also run for 94 yards.
Ahead of the trade deadline, he’ll be a name to keep a close eye on. The Falcons don’t make a ton of sense as a potential trade suitor, but perhaps they could have interest in swapping out Cousins for Wilson.
