Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters appeared to admit that her party was shutting down the government so that illegal migrants can have healthcare.
In a fiery interview, the lawmaker from California lashed out as she was grilled over why her party was intent on blocking a Republican funding bill, which sparked a federal collapse at 12.01am on Wednesday.
She was asked, ‘Are Democrats demanding healthcare for illegal aliens?’
Waters replied: ‘Democrats are demanding health care for everybody. We want to save lives. We want to make sure that health care is available to those who would die, but having the help of their government.’
The clash grabbed the attention of President Trump, who called out Waters on his favorite platform.
‘Maxine Waters admitted that she is demanding Healthcare for Illegal Aliens, and it’s going to be Top of the Line, taking American Taxpayers’ Healthcare away from them,’ he said.
Republicans supported a short-term measure to fund the government generally at current levels through November 21, but Democrats blocked it, insisting the measure address their concerns on health care.
They want to reverse the Medicaid cuts in President Donald Trump’s package of tax breaks and spending reductions from the summer and they want to extend tax credits that make health insurance premiums more affordable for millions of people who purchase through the marketplaces established by the Affordable Care Act.
Alison Steinberg, reporter for the right-wing Lindell TV network, was grilling Waters outside Congress.
‘Do Democrats want to prioritize the health care of illegal aliens over a government shutdown?’ Steinberg asked. ‘Because if the government does shut down, American workers will be furloughed.’
‘Excuse me. Stop it right there,’ Waters interjected. ‘We’re not prioritizing. What we’re doing is saying simply we want to keep the government open, and we want to work with the Republicans and have a bipartisan agreement to keep this government open, and health care is at the top of our agenda.’
‘So you’re good with the government shutdown, even if it means giving health care to people who aren’t Americans?’ Steinberg pressed Waters.
‘Well, you keep, that’s what you’re pushing on. What you’re trying to do is you’re standing here and you’re trying to make me say that somehow we’re going to put non-citizens over Americans. Quit it. Stop it. This is the kind of journalism we don’t need,’ Waters jabbed back.
‘You’re divisive. No, you’re not. You’re being divisive. No. Please. You don’t need to ask that question,’ Waters continued. ‘You’re just trying to get controversy here. You’re not going to get it from me. We want to save health care for all people,’ the California Democrat concluded.
After the shutdown commenced on Wednesday, Democrats doubled down on the notion that their opposition to the Republican government funding package was over healthcare funding. Still, they argued that funding for illegal aliens was not in their version of the funding bill.
During their weekly press conference on Capitol Hill, House Democratic Chair Pete Aguilar and Vice Chair Ted Lieu spoke to reporters on Wednesday to share their views on the root causes of the government shutdown.
‘It should come as no surprise to Republicans that we wouldn’t support their agenda that dismantles health care, makes it more expensive, and puts it out of reach for hard-working families. That’s why we’ve done everything in our power to give Republicans the opportunity to do the right thing, to join with us, to work, to collaborate, to have conversations, to have bipartisan funding bills that look out for the economic well-being of the country,’ Aguilar said at the press conference.
