FG Launches National Energy Masterplan Committee to Drive Sustainable Energy Future

The Federal Government has officially launched the National Energy Masterplan Implementation Committee (NEMiC), signaling a pivotal step toward a cleaner and more sustainable energy future for Nigeria.

The committee, inaugurated on September 18 in Abuja, will oversee the execution of the National Energy Masterplan (NEMP), a comprehensive framework aimed at diversifying Nigeria’s energy sources, enhancing energy security, and meeting global climate goals.

Speaking at the inauguration, Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, described the Masterplan as a transformative blueprint.

“NEMiC’s work will shape Nigeria’s economic growth, social progress, and environmental sustainability by delivering reliable, affordable, and climate-friendly energy solutions,” he stated.

Formed on October 17, 2024, by the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), NEMiC is tasked with securing funding, advancing renewable energy infrastructure, and managing projects in solar, wind, hydro, biomass, and other innovative technologies.

The committee will also operationalize the National Energy Fund, a mechanism to channel investments into energy efficiency and infrastructure development.

ECN Chief Executive Officer and NEMiC Chairman, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, presented the implementation roadmap during the ceremony, outlining strategies to accelerate renewable energy adoption and expand access to reliable electricity.

With over 80 million Nigerians lacking consistent power and more than 90 percent of households relying on biomass for cooking, the Masterplan aims to address critical energy gaps while fostering economic opportunities.

Nnaji reaffirmed the government’s commitment, stating, “NEMiC’s decisions will define Nigeria’s energy trajectory for decades. We trust in your capacity and vision to deliver.”

The event attracted key stakeholders from government, finance, and industry, including Mainstream Energy Solutions, Polaris Bank, Stanbic IBTC, and global firms like China Machinery Engineering Co. International organizations, such as UNIDO and UNDP, also pledged support.

The committee, co-chaired by Mr. Nurudeen Yakubu of Nor Group Ltd, includes experts like Prof. Kassim Gidado, Dr. Robert Ngwu, and representatives from the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, positioning NEMiC to drive Nigeria’s transition to a sustainable energy future.
