CEO of SC hospitality group retires

COLUMBIA — The president and chief executive officer of the South Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association (SCRLA) has retired after four years leading the hospitality trade and advocacy group.
Susan Cohen took over as chief executive of the organization in 2021, succeeding John Durst who was with the organization since 2012.
Prior to leading the association, Cohen worked as the director of development for Mount Pleasant-based Charlestowne Hotels and served as the president of the Clemson Area Chamber of Commerce. She also worked closely with the restaurant and lodging trade group as a member of the board and executive committee.
In an email sent out to SCRLA members, the board of directors thanked Cohen for her time with the organization and wished her luck in pursuing her future endeavors, including spending more time with her husband.
“Susan has been a valuable asset to the Association for the past four years, dedicating her energy and passion to advancing the hospitality industry across South Carolina, and her leadership has been instrumental in numerous successful initiatives,” the statement said.
Chief Operating Officer Douglas OFlaherty will serve as the interim president and CEO of the association as the board begins the process of searching for a permanent successor. OFlaherty joined SCRLA in 2001 and previously serves as the vice president of operations, responsible for membership, communication, education and finances.
In a statement, Board Chair Kirk Watkins told members that Cohen’s leadership will be missed and that the association will continue its strong commitment to its members.
