NEET UG: Will India’s Biggest Medical Entrance Exam Go Online?

The Ministry of Education, MoE is conducting a detailed data analysis to explore if there is a possibility to shift the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Undergraduates (NEET-UG) from the current pen-and-paper format to an online Computer Based Test (CBT) mode. The study is focused on three main areas The possible disadvantage to certain sections of studentsThe availability of infrastructure across the countryReport of other national-level exams that are already conducted in CBT mode.MoE will further share the findings with the Ministry of Health, which oversees medical admissions. A senior official told TOI that they are carefully examining whether switching to CBT would benefit students and ensure fairness. The official also added that any decision will be taken only after thorough consultations. Over 20 lakh candidates appear in NEET UG every year, aspiring to take admission in AIIMS and other popular medical colleges of India. This is not the first time that efforts are being made to explore this option. The discussions on moving NEET online have been held earlier. The controversy over the alleged paper leak intensified demands for reforms in the conduct of the examination. A high-level panel headed by former ISRO chief R. Radhakrishnan has also recommended exploring multi-stage testing for NEET-UG to improve transparency and efficiency. One of the major challenges will be the preparedness of rural and remote areas for conducting exams. At such places, access to computers and reliable internet is still limited. As of now, there is no timeline for such changes. Moreover, the ongoing analysis may provide a clearer roadmap for the future of NEET-UG.
