Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources urges citizens to take responsibility for a cleaner environment

Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Alhaji Yusif Sulemana, says solving Ghana’s sanitation crisis requires more than just government funding. He said lasting progress in waste management will only be achieved through attitudinal change.

Speaking at a presentation ceremony in Accra, Alhaji Sulemana stressed that regardless of how much is allocated to sanitation efforts, these will be undermined if citizens continue to litter and pollute their surroundings. The Minister made the remarks in Accra during a ceremony where Nestlé Ghana donated 78 tricycles to waste pickers. He commended Nestlé for its consistent support in the fight against plastic waste.

“We know the impact that plastic waste can cause on our environment and so if you have taken these giant steps to reduce the impact, we can only commend you and ask that your business flourish so that you continue to help us,” he added.

Managing Director of Nestle Ghana Limited, Salome Azevedo, said the donation forms part of the company’s commitment to sustainability.

“Nestle Ghana since 2019 has been making efforts towards plastic collection and today we collect more than what we produce. To date, we have donated 78 tricycles, personal protective equipment, picking tools, mobile phones to assist with collecting data,’’ She noted.

A representative of the Kpone Landfill Pickers Association, Divine Dekonor, thanked Nestlé for the support but appealed for further assistance to improve their livelihoods.

‘’We wish to thank Nestle Ghana Limited for this kind gesture of donating these motorized tricycles and various equipment to our association. This donation will therefore go a long way to support our activities and ultimately improve our working conditions and livelihoods. We would also like to take this opportunity to call for more support for informal waste pickers in Ghana and the Kpone Landfill Waste Pickers Association in particular,” he stated.

“Though we are key actors in the collection and management of solid waste in the country, contributing to the sustainability of our environment and mitigating the effects of climate change through our activities, we are still faced with many challenges. Our working conditions are very bad, with no adequate protection. So we consider this donation by Nestle Ghana Limited as timely and appropriate towards addressing some of the challenges we face,” he emphasized.

The donation is expected to boost waste collection efforts and encourage other organizations to support Ghana’s sanitation drive.
