When it comes to bringing authenticity to his characters, Vijay Varma has always gone the extra mile. Over the years, he has earned a name for himself as one of the most versatile performers, moving seamlessly between dark, layered characters and relatable, everyday men. Whether it was his impactful performance in Darlings, his intense portrayal in She, or his hard-hitting act in Kaalkoot, Vijay Varma has consistently proven that he can completely immerse himself in the roles he takes on.
Now, with his upcoming series Matka King, the actor seems to have raised the bar yet again. The project, which delves into the world of the underground betting business, is expected to present Vijay in an avatar that is both authentic and compelling. The actor has made sure his preparation matches the depth of the role. According to a source close to the development, “Vijay went the extra mile for Matka King. He even gained about 8 kilos, as he believed having a slight pot belly would make his portrayal more authentic and create the true impression of a ‘Matka’ King.”
Matka King, directed by Sairat and Fandry filmmaker Nagraj Manjule, is a tale set in the 1960s in Mumbai. The series aims to bring to life the thrilling and, at times, perilous world of Matka gambling, with Kritika Kamra and Vijay Varma playing major roles. It also features Sai Tamhankar and Gulshan Grover in significant roles.
Earlier, in an interview, Vijay shared an update on Matka King. The actor said, “I am in the process of wrapping Matka King. It’s again one of those larger-than-life epic stories of a man who found a loophole in the system and made the most out of it.”
Speaking about his approach to acting, Vijay added, “The pursuit actually is to be able to push boundaries and check if I can do more than what I did before. It all boils down to the opportunities, and somehow, I’ve been lucky to get great opportunities and to work with directors who see more in me than I see in myself.”
While Matka King promises to showcase Vijay in a gritty, layered role, the actor is also set to surprise fans with a completely different shade of his craft. For the very first time, he will be seen headlining a romantic drama. Vijay Varma will be seen in the upcoming romantic film Gustaakh Ishq along with Fatima Sana Shaikh, Naseeruddin Shah, and Sharib Hashmi.
