How many times have we heard commentators schooling captains for not listening to the wicketkeepers or at least consulting their opinion before wasting a review? On Thursday, Dhruv Jurel proved how crucial a wicketkeeper is for making a correct Decision Review System (DRS) call when he convinced an uncertain India Test captain Shubman Gill to ask for TV umpire’s assistance in the morning session of the 1st Test against West Indies in Ahmedabad.
Jasprit Bumrah’s good length delivery drew West Indies opener John Campbell into a drive but the ball seemed to have hit his outside edge before being caught by the wicketkeeper.
A loud appeal followed but it was turned down by the on-field umpire. Jurel and Bumrah appeared confident, but Gill wasn’t.
Jurel argued, “Zor se awaaz aaya hai (There was a loud noise)” following which Gill, reluctantly, made the signal for the umpire to turn to his colleague upstairs.
The first replay though was not convincing enough as the ball had brushed Campbell’s pad and the bat at the same time when the Ultra-edge registered a spike. Richard Illingworth took his time, reviewing multiple angles and concluded there were two spikes – one of the ball brushing the pad and the other kissing the outside edge.
Sharp ears, sharper instincts! ?⚡@dhruvjurel21 nails the review call, and skipper @ShubmanGill
pats him for the DRS brilliance. ?

Illingworth asked his on-field counterpart to change his decision and Gill was delighted, giving Jurel a bear hug. Campbell though didn’t look happy with the call as he trudged back to the dressing room after managing eight runs.
The morning session was dominated by India as West Indies lost half their side for 90 runs. Mohammed Siraj inflicted the maximum damage with three wickets while Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav landed a blow each.
