Hate is being weaponised everywhere in the world, actor Jason Isaacs has warned.
The star of The White Lotus and Sex Education delivered the alert during the Creative Coalition Humanitarian Awards lunch on Saturday (13 September), adding that his mother had been his inspiration when it came to humanitarian work, Variety reported.
As a child, Jason Isaacs noticed that his mother was “much more comfortable helping other people than being herself”, something that annoyed him at the time. “She told us how she was saving the world,” he said.
Now, 62, he added: “One thing my mother did give me, along with all kinds of terrible complexes, is a sense of responsibility, and that with great privilege comes great responsibility.”
Three years ago, Isaacs, also known for playing for Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, defended transgender comedian Jordan Gray following a performance where she stripped nude.
He described her as “magnificent”, and said it was “challenging and sensational television in a landscape that feels all-too-curated most of the time”.
However, when it came to wider trans rights issues, he said: “I’m a straight, middle-aged, white cis male and know where my opinions are uninformed, unwelcome and unhelpful. Those are areas for serious debate between serious people, conducted with respect and compassion.”
In a separate interview, he said he wouldn’t comment on Harry Potter author JK Rowling’s views on the trans community because he’d only met her for “about two minutes” and didn’t “understand who she is on Twitter”.
