India’s media and entertainment (M&E) industry has grown into a ₹2.5 trillion (₹2.5 lakh crore) powerhouse employing nearly 2.8 million people, with its roots tracing back to the launch of Zee TV in 1992, which ushered in the era of private satellite television.Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. (ZEE), which pioneered the space, on Wednesday marked 33 years of operations, calling the milestone a turning point for both the company and the industry.Over three decades, the M&E sector has expanded from a single satellite channel to more than 908 private television channels, 70+ OTT platforms and over 3,400 films produced annually. The ecosystem today supports nearly 40,000 artists, musicians and creators, alongside a growing digital economy.Punit Goenka, CEO of ZEE, said the company’s journey has been “inseparable from the story of India’s M&E industry.” He added: “Our success over the last 33 years is not defined only by numbers but also by the immense value we have generated for stakeholders and the meaningful moments of togetherness we have created on and off the screen.”With consumer demand shifting rapidly, ZEE said it is investing in new segments such as short-form content while expanding its omni-channel offerings across linear TV, digital, films and music.Live EventsThe industry continues to attract overseas capital, with nearly ₹1 lakh crore in foreign direct investment to date.
