'Bring Grandma Home': California Sees Massive Rally as Family, Supporters Demand Freedom for Harjit Kaur

A 73-year old Sikh woman was detained by immigration authorities in California after she went for a routine check-in with the US agency. The detention has sparked protests in California. More than 200 people gathered outside the El Sobrante Sikh Gurdwara in Contra Costa County, according to a report by The Times of India. The people stood there holding signs that read “Bring Grandma Home.” Supporters described her as “everyone’s grandmother,” with passing cars honking in solidarity. Harjit Kaur, who has lived in the East Bay in Northern California for more than 30 years, was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials during a routine check-on September 8. Harjit Kaur was undocumented, according to a report in ABC7News. She came to the US in 1992 from India as a single mother with two sons. Her asylum case was denied in 2012, but since then she has reported to ICE in San Francisco every six months for more than 13 years, her daughter-in-law Manji Kaur said. “ICE assured her she could remain in the US under supervision with work permits until they could receive her travel documents,” a report in Berkeleyside, a nonprofit news portal, said. Similar protests have been held earlier by Kaur’s family, Indivisible West Contra Costa County and the Sikh Centre. Members of US Rep John Garamendi’s staff, local elected officials and other political leaders also attended the protests. The family says the arrest occurred while Kaur was inquiring about her medication, raising concerns about her well-being in custody. “We don’t know what condition she’s being held. Is she getting her medication? Is she getting anything to eat?” her daughter-in-law Manjit Kaur said. “We just don’t want her to be at a detention center because of the living conditions. She is not doing good, and her health will only deteriorate at a rapid rate if we don’t get her out of there.” Get Latest News Live on Times Now along with Breaking News and Top Headlines from US News and around the World.
