‘Please Don’t Cancel Me’: Vir Das Mocks Western Comics While Comparing Cancel Culture In India

Actor-comedian Vir Das has never shied away from speaking his mind, and his latest stand-up set is no exception. In a new snippet he shared on Instagram, the Emmy-winning comic compared how cancel culture plays out in the West versus in India — and his sharp, witty take has struck a chord with audiences.
‘Please Don’t Cancel Me’
Performing to a packed crowd, Vir began with his trademark self-deprecating humor: “Please don’t cancel me, I apologise! It would really interfere with my incarceration.” He explained how American comics often complain about Twitter mobs, joking that one of his peers told him, “Vir, cancel culture is insane! The other day a mob came after me.”

Vir playfully responded on stage by mimicking a swift kick, comparing their complaints to “telling the freshly castrated that your balls itch.”
‘There Are Court Cases Inside the Envelope’
Taking a jab at constant Western critiques of Indian comedy, Vir said the most frustrating thing he’s read is the question, “Why doesn’t Indian comedy push the envelope?” His answer drew roars of laughter: “Really b*h? Because we looked inside the envelope! There are court cases inside the envelope. There is a court date on top of the envelope.”
The line is a direct nod to his own run-ins with the law.
Vir Das’s Legal Troubles
Vir has often been at the center of controversies. In 2021, his monologue “I Come From Two Indias” — delivered at Washington DC’s Kennedy Center — sparked outrage back home, with police complaints accusing him of insulting India by addressing topics such as women’s safety, pollution, and political polarization.
In 2020, his Netflix series Hasmukh faced legal action from a group of lawyers who claimed that one of the episodes defamed the legal profession.
Fool Volume on Netflix
Despite the controversies, Vir remains one of India’s most prominent comedic voices globally. His latest stand-up special, Fool Volume, dropped on Netflix on July 18, cementing his reputation as a comic who balances satire with social commentary, never afraid to provoke thought while delivering laughs.
