Cabinet approves Rs 11,000 cr six-year plan to boost pulses production, raises MSPs for Rabi crops

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, approved a six-year plan boost pulses production, for an amount worth Rs 11,000 crore. The initiative seeks to increase domestic output of pulses, reduce import dependence, and secure food security for the nation.The Cabinet also approved Rs 842 billion towards minimum support price for rabi season, in an initiative to support India’s farmers. Further, the six-year plan on pulse production will adopt a comprehensive strategy covering research, seed systems, area expansion, procurement, and price stability. It emphasizes the development and dissemination of high-yielding, pest-resistant, and climate-resilient pulse varieties. Multi-location trials will be conducted in major pulse-growing states to ensure regional suitability.To ensure the availability of premium seeds, states will prepare five-year rolling seed production plans. Breeder seeds will be overseen by ICAR, while foundation and certified seeds will be produced by state and central agencies and monitored through the SATHI portal. By 2030-31, 126 lakh quintals of certified seeds will be distributed to farmers, covering 370 lakh hectares.Live EventsThe Mission also seeks to expand the area under pulses by an additional 35 lakh hectares, targeting rice fallow lands and other suitable areas. 88 lakh seed kits will be distributed free of cost to farmers, alongside capacity-building programs to promote sustainable cultivation practices.To strengthen markets and value chains, the Mission will support the creation of 1,000 post-harvest processing units, with a maximum subsidy of Rs 25 lakh per unit. Maximum procurement of Tur, Urad, and Masoor under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) of PM-AASHA will be ensured through NAFED and NCCF for the next four years for participating farmers. Monitoring global pulse prices will help safeguard farmer confidence.By 2030-31, the Mission is expected to expand the area under pulses to 310 lakh hectares, raise production to 350 lakh tonnes, and increase yields to 1,130 kg per hectare, contributing to self-reliance, higher farmer incomes, and sustainable farming practices.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
