Dehradun- The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved increasing the MBBS seats from 150 to 200 at Shri Guru Ram Rai Institute of Medical and Health Sciences (SGRR IM&HS), Dehradun. This information was given by the Principal of the institute, Dr Ashok Nayak.The increase in MBBS seats will not only expand the medical education opportunities for the youth of Uttarakhand but will also strengthen health services in the state and western Uttar Pradesh.Also Read: Assam Gets NMC Nod for Pragjyotishpur Medical College with 50 MBBS SeatsAfter the approval, Shrimahant Devendra Das congratulated all the faculty, staff and management of the college, reports Jagran. SGRR IM&HS was established in 2006 and has become one of the largest medical colleges in Uttarakhand. It now has 200 MBBS seats, 162 postgraduate seats and 19 super-speciality (DM/MCH) seats available.Meanwhile, the Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, affiliated to the institute, serves thousands of patients daily and has been highly rated in the recent NMC assessment, citing its strong clinical base, experienced faculty, advanced research facilities and well-equipped library.Similarly, NMC has also recently increased the number of MBBS seats at BLDE Society’s BM Patil Medical College in Vijayapura, Karnataka by 50. On this, Medical Dialogues reported that from the current academic year, i.e., 2025, a total of 250 students will be admitted to MBBS courses at the college. The college had applied for additional seats in January this year.Before this decision, the hospital and college were inspected by NMC officials in June 2025. During the visit, the officials inspected various physical infrastructure facilities, including building and equipment, and human resources like qualified specialists, nursing staff, patient registration and hostel facilities for students and others. After the inspection, the team submitted a report to the NMC. Based on the report, the NMC has sanctioned 50 additional MBBS seats in BM Patil Medical College. This additional allocation will help in making medical education accessible to more students of North Karnataka and providing quality healthcare facilities to the poor, a release said.
