On the evening of September 30, 2025, a powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the central Philippines, with its epicenter near Bogo City, Cebu. The shallow quake, occurring approximately 10 kilometers beneath the surface, sent shockwaves across the Visayas region. It resulted in at least 60 reported deaths, over 140 injuries, significant infrastructure damage, and widespread panic among residents and visitors alike.Several viral videos captured the earthquake’s unfolding and its immediate impact:The most widely shared video is British influencer Sam Pepper’s live streaming video, shot inside a bustling cafe located in one of Cebu City’s tallest buildings, vividly captures the moment the 6.9-magnitude quake struck. As Pepper engages with viewers, the earth suddenly begins to shake violently. The restaurant’s lights flicker and objects on tables rattle and fall as the tremors intensify. Customers’ initial startled reactions quickly turn into urgent evacuation as the shaking worsens.— sampepper (@sampepper) The video documents raw human reactions, including startled voices, rapid movement towards safety, and the chaos of escaping a high-rise structure amidst aftershocks.Another striking video captured by a car’s dashcam shows the Marcelo Fernan Bridge, a major connection between Mandaue City and Lapu-Lapu City, visibly swaying amidst the tremors. Vehicles on the bridge experience alarming movement, whilst people can be seen holding onto the bridge’s boundary walls to save themselves. The footage became viral as an urgent testimony of the earthquake’s intensity and the public risk it posed.Live Events— RT_com (@RT_com) Amid this chaos, the prestigious Miss Asia Pacific International pageant held in Cebu was abruptly interrupted. Video footage reveals contestants and guests fleeing the stage as the building shakes, and even parts of the ceiling can be seen falling on the ground. The show’s participants reportedly escaped unharmed, but the moment vividly portrays the earthquake’s sudden intrusion into public gatherings.Heritage structures also suffered. Images and videos of the Archdiocesan Shrine of Santa Rosa de Lima and other churches show partial collapse of centuries-old stone walls. These losses represent not only physical destruction but cultural and historical wounds that deepen the tragedy for local communities. The earthquake also caused widespread power outages in Cebu and neighboring islands, disrupting communications and complicating rescue efforts. Despite extensive damage, major transport infrastructure including Mactan-Cebu International Airport remained operational, facilitating emergency response. In all, these videos, taken from different vantage points—inside buildings, on bridges, crowded events, streets, and cultural sites—form a composite narrative of a region rocked by a powerful natural disaster.
