Tennessee Titans rookie Cam Ward is a young player in the NFL, and with that comes a lot of room for growth. Following the team’s 0-4 record, the No. 1 overall pick decided to bash the team, saying outright that they are “a**.”

While having a 0-4 record is never a good thing, Ward’s words were clearly a lot worse than he intended them to be. During a press conference, he let it be known just how bad he believes the Titans are. Though it was supposed to be a moment of self-reflection, it turned into a moment of simply bashing the team.
“If we keep it a buck right now, we ass. We 0-4. At this point, we got nothing to lose. We’ve dropped a quarter of our f****** games and we’ve yet to do anything. We have to lock in, especially myself. The offensive line, from the defensive line, the special teams, to all three phases. We have to play together. We have not played together this year yet. That is just something that we want to preach about … it has to show up on Sundays. It hasn’t shown up, but it got to show up next week,” Ward said following the loss.

Ward may have been trying to state that the Titans are not playing like a team, but it ended up being a two-minute-long critique of their 0-4 start. Naturally, this has led to Titans head coach Brian Callahan speaking out about the rookie’s comments.

“He’s a young player,” Callahan said. “He’s the No. 1 overall pick, he’s the face of the franchise, if you will. He’s got high expectations for himself, and we have high expectations around him, and we all want to meet those.
Callahan clearly understands that Ward was speaking out of emotion, but that does not excuse the words that the Titans franchise quarterback used.
“His ability to be in that spotlight, in that moment is a growing process for him. He’s growing up, I think he’s starting to understand the weight of his words – what those things mean when he speaks and everyone’s listening and watching. And even though he follows up his commentary with a lot of the right things, it’s the one-liner that gets taken.”
It is understandable that Ward is upset with the Titans being 0-4, as any player on a team with no wins would feel the same. Still, as the de facto leader of the team, he needs to be the first one to rally the troops.
Ward will continue growing in this league, and the way in which he critiques his own team should also grow.
