Suspect arrested, 1 injured after shooting during altercation at Rosa Parks Transit Center in Detroit
DETROIT – One person has been arrested following a shooting that left one person injured at the Rosa Parks Transit Center in downtown Detroit.
The incident occurred on Wednesday (Oct. 1) around 2:30 p.m.
Detroit police Commander Matthew Fulgenzi provided details on the shooting.
“There was an altercation here at the Rosa Parks Transit Center over by Bay 6,” said Fulgenzi.
Fulgenzi said officers stationed nearby observed a fight breaking out on the opposite end of the transit center and immediately responded before numerous shots were fired.
Police said they quickly secured the area as crowds began to gather.
They said they located one man suffering from a gunshot wound to his foot.
Officials said they provided aid while medics transported the victim to a hospital in Metro Detroit.
The injury was described as non-life-threatening.
A significant police response followed, including detectives and additional resources.
Leveraging city technology and partnerships downtown, Fulgenzi said officers reviewed video footage and gathered descriptions and images of those involved.
Police said two individuals were detained nearby, and one suspect was arrested in connection with the shooting.
Police believe the suspects are responsible for the act.
Detectives are canvassing the area and taking statements as the investigation continues.
Fulgenzi said findings will be turned over to the Wayne County prosecutor’s office.
Regarding what led to the shooting, Fulgenzi said the incident happened quickly.
“These two groups came together almost immediately, starting a fight,” Fulgenzi said. “It appears they may have known each other or something occurred before, but this wasn’t a long-standing dispute.”
Fulgenzi said the fight escalated rapidly, a weapon was produced, and shots were fired.
Police reported that the group involved consisted of approximately 15 to 20 males.
While the Rosa Parks Transit Center is typically busy, there were no other guests near the immediate area during the incident.
Fulgenzi emphasized the danger posed to officers on duty.
“They’re on post doing their job, and you have someone reckless producing a firearm and firing it. We will not tolerate it,” Fulgenzi said.
The suspects were found near the scene, not on a bus or elsewhere in the city.
