Maryland honors ‘exemplary’ schools after US ends Blue Ribbon awards

Maryland is recognizing seven “exemplary” schools this week, reinstating state awards after the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program was discontinued by the U.S. Department of Education
The Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools program recognizes schools based on how students perform on national and state assessments and on how well the schools narrow performance disparities between student groups. The state program was last in effect during the 2019-2020 school year.
“While the federal government steps away from its obligations to our students, Maryland is stepping up,” Gov. Wes Moore said in a news release. “We are proud to elevate and honor these exceptional institutions of learning, which are inspiring the next generation to work and lead.”
Seven schools in Maryland were nominated before the discontinuation of the national program, and are now being recognized by the state program as Blue Ribbon Schools:
Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, Baltimore City Public Schools
Diamond Elementary School, Montgomery County Public Schools
Myersville Elementary School, Frederick County Public Schools
Stoneleigh Elementary School, Baltimore County Public Schools
Wilson Wims Elementary School, Montgomery County Public Schools
St. Louis School, Archdiocese of Baltimore
Little Flower School, Archdiocese of Washington
