49ers lose Brock Purdy vs. Rams after injury setback

Injuries just won’t leave the 49ers alone.
San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy will miss Thursday night’s game against the Rams with a toe injury, giving Mac Jones his third start of the season, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Wednesday.
It will be Purdy’s third absence through five weeks after he suffered a shoulder and toe injury during Week 1 and missed the subsequent two games.
And that’s not all.
The 49ers will also be without starting wide receivers Ricky Pearsall (knee) and Jauan Jennings (ankle, ribs).
San Francisco was already without star tight end George Kittle, who is on injured reserve through at least Week 5 with a hamstring injury he suffered during the 49ers’ season opener.
Despite the injuries, the 49ers have started 3-1, although they were upset on their home field by Jacksonville on Sunday.
Purdy played in last week’s game against the Jaguars but didn’t quite look like himself, throwing two interceptions and completing just 57.9 percent of his passes.
Pearsall and Jennings were underwhelming in that game as well, combining for just six catches and 70 yards through the air.
Jones has filled in nicely for Purdy, going 2-0 while throwing for 563 yards with four touchdown passes and just one interception during his pair of starts.
San Francisco will turn to backup wide receivers Demarcus Robinson and Kendrick Bourne and tight end Jake Tonges — and hope for a big game from star running back Christian McCaffrey — on Thursday.
The 49ers hope for better health when they head to Tampa Bay to play the Buccaneers on Oct. 12.
