Coronation Street fans were left ‘double-checking’ that an exit should be taking place as Jenny Connor was seen saying her goodbyes. During Wednesday’s (October 1) visit to the famous Street, viewers saw the former Rovers Return landlady caught out in a lie, which left her questioning her life in Weatherfield Those who follow the ITV soap saw Jenny let her crush, George Shuttleworth, think that Rita Tanner was really ill after she suffered a fall earlier this week, as she remained jealous of his blossoming relationship with Christina Boyd. George ended up popping into see Rita, with a homemade soup, but as she was about to tell George the truth, Jenny spotted Christina in the corner of her eye and continued to lie about Rita’s health in a bid for attention. Undertaker George was horrified with Jenny heading to the funeral parlour to apologise. But when she was there, she found an order of service for a woman just a year older than her who had just died. It made Jenny think about her own life, and was later heard talking about her happiness in the Rovers, having spent her early years watching Bet Lynch in charge of the beloved boozer. “I watched her swanning around, queen bee, in this world that was all hers and I never imagined one day that would be me,” she said. “Or that one day I felt that I would really belong there. I’ve still got the name plate. It’s under my bed.” George then suggested she go off to Tenerife to restart her life, but Jenny claim she couldn’t as she had to care for Rita. The undertaker then got involved and spoke to Rita, later handed Jenny an envelope of cash and told Jenny: “It’s for a flight – one way. “It’s time you start liking yourself again and I don’t think that’s something you’re getting round here. Who wants to spend life being grateful? And if you stick around here long enough it’ll be my turn. I’ve got friends around here, good friends. I will be alright.” Outside of the Rovers, Rita and Jenny’s emotional moment continued and as Rita became tearful, she promised Jenny she’d be okay without her and would visit her in Tenerife when she could. Rita went back into the pub but unable to resist one last moment inside her former boozer, Jenny popped back inside and took in the scene, before clocking Rita, whose eyes were still filling with tears. With cases in hand, Jenny then headed for her new life in Spain, with one last knowing glance between her and Rita, and a look at the pub she once ran. While it has been known since August that actress Sally Ann Matthews would be bowing out of Corrie, fans were surprised by the low-key exit. @youngemz99 said: “That Jenny exit! It feels like the end of an era with her and Rita too, that mother/daughter duo was brilliant. They didn’t always see eye to eye, but in the end they left things on such good terms. #Corrie.”
