Which Ohio university added new Applied AI/Information Systems business degree?

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron this week announced it has launched a new Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in Applied Artificial Intelligence and Information Systems.
The start of the new degree program comes as the demand for graduates who can connect new technology with business has increased, according to a university news release.
Globally, the artificial intelligence market size was estimated at $279.22 billion in 2024, and is projected to reach $3,497.26 billion in 2033, according to a report from Grand View Research.
Technology leaders’ ongoing research and innovation are driving the adoption of advanced technologies in industries such as automotive, healthcare, retail, finance and manufacturing.
The university’s new degree program aims to help students balance data, technology and strategy, according to the release. It also aims to equip graduates with a technical understanding of AI and how to use it responsibly and effectively.
“AI is fundamentally transforming the way businesses operate and compete,” College of Business Associate Dean Debmalya Mukherjee said in the release. “Equipping our students with applied AI skills directly aligns with the University of Akron College of Business motto, Experience Business.”
The new program goes beyond coding and software development by focusing on connecting business applications with applied technical training. Program highlights include machine learning, deep learning, data provisioning and AI-driven decision making, according to the release. Program courses include:
Introduction to Applied AI and Information Systems
Data Provision for Applied Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence for Business
Deep Learning for Business
“This is about preparing students for the future of work,” Dr., Professor and Chair of the Department of Management Erin Makarius said in the release. “Companies need graduates who can understand AI’s capabilities, communicate its value to decision-makers and implement solutions responsibly. Our students will leave with the skills to bridge that gap between business and technology.”
The program will help students combine classroom knowledge with professional practice through hands-on learning, internships, industry partnerships and real-world projects. Program graduates will be equipped for careers in business intelligence, information technology and systems management, entrepreneurship, and AI-focused roles across industries, according to the release.
The introduction class will be offered for the upcoming spring semester. The program officially starts in the fall of 2026, according to the university. To learn more about the program, visit uakron.edu/business.
