EUGENE — One of the most prominent transfers to Oregon this offseason is choosing to redshirt.
Makhi Hughes, who transferred to UO from Tulane, asked to redshirt and Oregon is honoring that request, Dan Lanning announced Wednesday.
A preseason AP All-American, Hughes he rushed for 1,401 yards and 15 touchdowns and had 19 catches for 176 yards and two scores last season.
But he was buried on Oregon’s depth chart and was either the fourth or fifth running back in the seven-deep group. Hughes, who did not travel with the Ducks to Penn State, had just 17 carries for 70 yards and two catches for 24 yards in the first four games of this season.
He missed 2022 season due to injury, making it possible for him to receive a medical hardship waiver for that season and still have a redshirt available for this season.
Hughes is the brother of Oregon cornerback Na’eem Offord, who has played in all five games as a true freshman.
