GECOM’s term should end with the election of a President and National Assembly

Dear Editor,

My limited Constitution-Commonsense informs that the term of the Elections Commission, (Chair and Commissioners), ends with declaration of elected President and National Assembly members, unless there are other reasons to cut short any individual’s term in office. If this is not so, how would the newly elected President fulfill his prerogative to appoint members of the Commission? Should the newly elected President be forced to accept the Election Commission appointed by any past President/s?

Imagine if neither the PPP/C or APNU won the presidency, the brand new party-President would have to live with the current PPP/C and APNU commissioners. And there is no need to legally challenge Mr. Norton continuing as Opposition Leader. As Mr. Norton will not be in the National Assembly, he cannot be the Leader of Opposition. The non-Government members in the Assembly have the power to elect someone among them to be the Leader of the Opposition.

Though there are many changes needed to the Laws, the Constitution mandates the President to rule. Hope this Parliamentary term will definitely deliver the needed Law changes, including the set-up of a truly independent and inclusive Elections Commission, a Commission to assure every Guyanese that they will never have to distrust future election results.
