Kochi: Authorities in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh have initiated investigations into the deaths and illnesses of children linked to the consumption of certain cough syrups. The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has collected samples in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhindwara district as part of the probe. In Rajasthan, the distribution of specific cough syrups has been halted, and batches are undergoing urgent testing.
Investigations and Bans
In Rajasthan, a five-year-old boy in Sikar died after consuming cough syrup supplied under the state’s free medicine scheme. Additionally, a three-year-old in Bharatpur fell seriously ill after taking the same syrup. In response, the state government has suspended the distribution of the affected syrup and launched an investigation into its manufacture and supply.
Similarly, in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhindwara district, six children have died over the past month from suspected kidney infections after reportedly consuming two types of similar syrups. As a result, Coldrif and Nextro-DS Syrups have been banned by the district administration.
Sample Testing and Analysis
Authorities are analyzing multiple samples, including water, entomological, and drug samples, to rule out infectious diseases. However, the quality of the cough syrup has become the central focus of the investigation. The NCDC team is working to determine whether the syrups were contaminated or improperly manufactured.
Public Health Concerns
The incidents have raised serious public health concerns, prompting calls for stricter regulations and oversight of pharmaceutical products. Health experts emphasize the need for rigorous quality control measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
