A girls’ holiday to Ibiza descended into chaos after she was forced to wade through sewage-filled floodwater and miss out on the island’s famous parties.

Freya Meader, 24, had travelled from just outside London on a special trip with university friends when torrential rain hit the party resort on Monday night.

The group were left knee-deep in ‘disgusting’ water after sewers burst and rats were seen running in the streets.

Freya said: ‘We got a bus which took us to the old town, where the water was nasty. It proper stank.

‘The flooding is awful, it was knee deep for people. We were soaked through. It is definitely not what you expect in Ibiza.’

Freya and her friends lost hundreds of pounds on tickets for iconic clubs.

‘We are pissed off about the events,’ she said. ‘We paid €75 each for Pacha and we could not get there. It is demoralising because you come to Ibiza for a reason and then because the weather is shit you can’t go to an event.’

Instead, the group were holed up in their waterlogged hotel, playing cards and drinking fizz.

‘It is so boring being stuck in the room,’ Freya added. ‘There are only so many card games you can play.’

The chaos began as the group were leaving Amnesia in the early hours of Tuesday. Torrential rain left them stranded with no taxis available, queues stretching the length of the club. They eventually found a coach, only to be dropped in the flooded old town.

Soldiers were flown in by helicopter to help deal with the crisis as emergency alerts were sent out telling people not to travel.

Freya said: ‘We then woke up shit scared because our phone went off with the emergency alert.

‘We looked outside and it was the weirdest thing ever. It was like being in Cornwall in the middle of winter.’

Videos showed flooding racing through Ibiza’s streets and water gushing through the roof of the island’s airport.

‘It was a proper special trip. It does put a damper on our experience. It is very sad,’ Freya said. ‘We lost the whole day, which is so infuriating.’

For some, the floods have ruined livelihoods and wrecked homes (Picture: EPA)

The group arrived on Sunday and are due to fly home Thursday. Although the weather has since improved, floodwater remains across parts of the town.

The storm was triggered by the remnants of Hurricane Gabrielle, which weakened as it crossed the Atlantic but still brought heavy downpours and disruption.

The Met Office has warned the same system could affect the UK later this week as it collides with other tropical cyclones moving across the Atlantic.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist Chris Bulmer said: ‘The situation becomes more complex later in the week as tropical cyclones Humberto and Imelda, currently over the southwest Atlantic, influence our weather, increasing the risk of a deep low developing near the UK.

‘If this materialises, we could see some very strong winds as well as further heavy rainfall Friday into Saturday, but at this time the development and track of this system remains uncertain. We’re monitoring this closely.’
