This free and open-source writing tool is the perfect writing environment for most people

For any serious writer, finding the perfect writing environment is always a constant struggle. We are often left with choosing an expensive subscription, dealing with bloated word processors, or settling for something simple but lacking in features. This is precisely where Manuskript shines.
Maunskript isn’t just another text editor with Markdown support; it’s a dedicated writing application designed for novelists, screenwriters, and long-form authors who need to organize complex projects. Here is how Manuskript allows you to build your world and outline your story with precision before ever writing the first chapter, all without costing you a dime.
A built-in outliner
Start your novel in style
When I first started using Manuskript, the Outliner instantly became the control center for all my writing projects. It transforms a collection of ideas and notes into a structured project.
This feature allows writers to hierarchically organize the entire work, much like a traditional physical binder, but with superior flexibility. Users can segment their project into major parts, which contain chapters, which, in turn, are broken down into individual scenes or sections.
It is essentially a primary tool for defining the novel’s structure. A major advantage is the ability to easily drag-and-drop any element — a chapter, a scene, or even a smaller section to a new position. This allows for rapid experimentation with the narrative sequence, making revisions seamless.
Each entry in the Outliner has a dedicated space for summary notes, character mentions, or plot reminders.
There is even an option to set a custom icon, tag, and status for each chapter in the outline.
Character and plot management
A crucial aspect for any writer
Manuskript provides specialized modules for character and plot management that move far beyond simple note-taking. These features enable writers to construct and manage a comprehensive infrastructure for their story world, ensuring consistency and depth throughout the entire manuscript.
You can head to the Character menu and add details like name, importance, motivation, goal, one-line summary, and more.
The Plots and World sections are designed for the high-level construction and organization of the framework. For example, the World section is invaluable for science fiction, fantasy, or historical fiction.
It provides structured categories for organizing lore, setting details, cultural rules, magic systems, and historical timelines, and prevents writers from losing track of their own creative rules.
Focus mode
Remove distractions with a single click
Manuskript’s distraction-free mode is another critical feature designed to eliminate distractions. When activated, the distraction-free mode removes all elements from the screen. This typically includes the application menu bars, the outliner panel, and any unnecessary toolbars or status icons.
Overall, it presents a minimalist canvas where the writer’s focus is solely on the text being created. It features a centered format with customizable backgrounds and text colors. I use it all the time as it helps me achieve a flow state by removing visual clutter.
There is also an option to set the time duration and word count for each chapter. These features act as a soft commitment contract. The software tracks progress and prevents the writer from exiting the mode until the goal is met or bypassed.
Novel Assistant
A major addition
Here is where Manuskript truly shines. The Novel Assistant is a core feature designed specifically to overcome the challenge of building complex, large-scale narratives.
It employs a guided, sequential framework (often referred to as the Snowflake Method) that guides the writer through distinct stages.
To put it simply, it begins by helping you define the core idea and then expands that into a full, detailed plot summary. You then develop detailed profiles for all your main characters, ensuring their motives and conflicts are consistent and make sense.
Finally, the Novel Assistant helps you break down the entire story into an ordered list of scenes. This process ensures your novel has a strong, logical structure from the outset and ensures you don’t start writing until you know exactly where your story is headed.
Open-source nature
Have peace of mind
Manuskript is free and open-source. Being free of cost means the full, professional-grade writing suite — including the Novel Assistant and complex character tracking is accessible to anyone.
Even more significantly, its open-source license means the underlying code is publicly available, allowing anyone to inspect it and verify their claims. The writing community can continue to update and improve the program.
Forget expensive software
Manuskript isn’t just a viable alternative to high-priced software; it’s a superior choice for anyone who values organization, structure, and the freedom of open-source nature. From its Novel Assistant to its ability to manage massive worlds and characters, Manuskript delivers professional-level capabilities at absolutely no cost.
