South Korean actor Kim Joo-young dies due to pneumonia, funeral on October 2

Veteran South Korean actor Kim Joo-young died on September 30, 2025, aged 73. His family announced the news of his death on October 1, stating the actor was suffering from pneumonia and succumbed to it. The actor played important roles in several Korean dramas based on historical events and characters.Kim Joo-young breathed his last at 3:30 p.m South Korea time (2:30 am EST, New York) at Chung-Ang University Hospital where he was undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit following infections in his lungs due to which he developed pneumonia. The actor had been suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis for several decades. Dealing with weak lungs was always a challenge for him and his health suddenly deteriorated leading to his hospitalization.His funeral will take place at Room 8 of the funeral hall at Chung-Ang University Hospital. His body will be taken for burial at Incheon Family Park from the hospital at 7:30 a.m. South Korean time (8:30 pm EST, New York) on October 2.Kim Joo-young’s careerHe started his career in 1974 after completing his acting course from the Department of Theater and Film at Chung-Ang University in the South Korean capital Seoul a year earlier. His first break came as a sixth-class talent in MBC’s public recruitment. He later passed the 15th-class public recruitment for Dongyang Broadcasting Company (TBC).Live EventsSome of his most important, memorable and powerful performances came in dramas like “Tears of the Dragon” and “Jeong Do-jeon”. The 159-episode long “Tears of the Dragon”, a South Korean historical drama television series, ran from November 24, 1996 to May 31, 1998, on KBS1.His major works came in the following dramas: “Chief Inspector”, “Five Hundred Years of the Joseon Dynasty”, “Tears of the Dragon”, “The King and the Queen”, “Taizo Wang Geon”, “Empress Myeongseong”, “Age of Warriors”, “Admiral Yi Sun-sin”, “Empress Chun Chu”, and “Jeong Do-jeon”.According to a report by The Chosun Daily, a South Korean news portal, Kim Joo-young last acted in “Jeong Do-jeon” which came in 2014 after which he became a shaman.
